A practical guide

How to use Protect PDF

  1. Choose a PDF and enter a new open password twice.

  2. Apply password encryption in your browser.

  3. Download the protected PDF and keep the password somewhere safe.

Opening password and permissions

The tool encrypts the PDF with AES-256 and sets an open password. It does not provide digital-rights management: anyone who knows the password can open and decrypt the document. Keep an unprotected original in a safe place in case you lose the password.

Processing and limits

The PDF is processed in your browser and is not uploaded for conversion. The source file limit is 100 MB. Very large files may be constrained by device memory.

Frequently asked questions

Does the password prevent copying or printing?

No. This tool protects opening with a password; it is not DRM and cannot prevent someone who can open the file from copying its contents.

Can PDF64 recover a forgotten password?

No. Keep the password you set. Use Unlock PDF only when you already know the password for a protected file.
